There are several schools of thought in course design today. Ours is to consider the owner's needs and desires, then after detailed study of the land, design a course that is natural, looks like it belongs, creating interest and surprise where possible, without making something foreign to what nature has already given us. This natural course has a classic, long-lasting beauty. It is enjoyable, challenging and maintainable.From the beginning, Mark McCumber's design philosophy has emphasized the traditional and classical principles of course design similar to the great courses created by Donald Ross, Alister MacKenzie and A.W. Tillinghast. These courses embody all that is good about golf course architecture - interest, challenge, strategy, surprise, aesthetics, naturalness. We try to incorporate these same qualities in every course designed by Mark McCumber and Associates.We believe that it is important for the architect to be integrally involved in the construction process. We spend considerable time on site during construction working with the crews to make field adjustments. And we recognize the importance of the interaction between the architect and the golf course shaper during construction as vitally important to the creation of an excellent golf course. It is the shaper who translates the design into the finished product.
